In the wake of Hurricane Francine, our communities in Ascension, Assumption, and St. James parishes faced unprecedented challenges. However, amidst the debris and devastation, there emerged a spirit of resilience and hope, thanks to the dedicated efforts of Rural Roots Louisiana and members like Keeonkah Julien-Judson (affectionately known as Kee-Kee) and Pastor Harry Joseph Sr.
Rural Roots Louisiana has been at the forefront of recovery efforts, working tirelessly to support residents during and after the storm. Rural Roots Louisiana partnered with Louisiana Just Recovery and SBP, a National Disaster Response team, to assist 32 homeowners affected by the hurricane. Their collaborative efforts have not only provided immediate relief but also set in motion a process for long-term recovery.
As part of this initiative, 12 homeowners have already begun their FEMA appeals process with SBP's guidance, paving the way for potential financial assistance. Residents can qualify for up to $42,500 for housing repairs and another $42,500 for other needs, contingent on successful appeals. This crucial funding can help families rebuild their lives and restore stability in the aftermath of the disaster.
Recognizing the importance of ongoing support, Kee-Kee will extend her hours to ensure that all contacts are followed up diligently. Her commitment to the residents underscores the dedication of Rural Roots Louisiana to their communities.
Pastor Harry Joseph Sr. has played a pivotal role in making sure residents are aware of these vital programs. His leadership and outreach have been instrumental in connecting families to the resources they desperately need.
Louisiana Just Recovery played an essential role in this process, Toi J Carter was vital to the success of this project and was on-site in assisting with tarping and cleaning after the storm as well; it has been a pleasure to work with this organization.
Together, we can rebuild our homes and strengthen our communities. Let us stand in solidarity and support one another on this journey to recovery and preserving our community from disasters caused by the climate change crisis.
